Following a disastrous harvest and facing another perilous winter, hope is running out in the village of Darcy. In a courageous bid to escape a dreadful fate, Elka leads her young brother far away into the depths of the king’s forest, where they encounter an extraordinary wolf pack who guide them on a magical journey into the unknown.

This musical adaption of award-winning author Susan Price’s children’s novel is a tale of tragedy, magic, redemption and celebration. A coming-of-age story in which two children begin to discover who they really are and what it really means to find home.

Susan Price:

“Called on to say a few words after the performance I said that, although a bit late – my birthday had been the week before – it was the best birthday present I’d ever had.”

“I mentioned that I’d written a book called The Ghost Drum, which had been awarded the Carnegie Medal for best book of its year – and that this was better. And I mean it…”

His father king Aegeus has made a pact with King Minos of Crete that has devastated the lives of ordinary Athenians. Enraged by his father’s cowardice, Theseus leaves for Crete, promising to slay the minotaur, but in doing so sets off a chain of events that will change the course of many lives and transform Athens for ever.

The little boy from the hilltop village in the forest longs for adventure. When he discovers a group of adults setting off into the jungle in search of honey for the annual festival cake, he and his friends decide to follow in secret. Little do they know that they have begun an adventure that will take them through the wildest part of the jungle and far, far beyond…

This Brazilian folktale is brought vividly to life through song, chant, storytelling, movement and percussion in a 20-minute musical aimed at KS2 children. It has been performed by children at Highgate, Ashmole, Tiverton and Sunnyhill primary schools in London.

Kate recently collaborated with artist Reza Ben Gajra and 80 Year 3 children at Sunnyhill Primary School to create an animated adaptation of the show.

“Her skills as a writer and composer of children’s productions are exceptional. Year 3’s performance of ‘How the Stars came to be’ combined beautiful narrative with music, dance and drama to produce a truly memorable piece of work”.

William Dean

Headteacher, Highgate Primary

“How the Stars Came to Be is an outstanding cross-curricular script which had the children engaged from the start. This linked not only to our Brazilian theme but also covered our remit to deliver first class internationally linked dramas. I’ve worked in Drama for many years and Stilitz’s script really does stand out as something special!’
